Workshop for Turkish-Armenian Dialogue and Memory Walk
24 – 28 April, 2017 in Istanbul
11 – 16 May, 2017 in Yerevan
The purpose of the Workshop for Turkish-Armenian Dialogue and Memory Walk (for short referred to as Workshop) is to increase dialogue and partnership among educational institutions in Armenia and Turkey and students of social sciences, to develop inclusive discourses in the Armenian-Turkish relations and increase awareness of the largely marginalized peace and conflict transformation narratives. The Workshop will build capacity in young professionals integrating conflict transformation practices into their academic paths and empowering them to get engaged in fostering a culture of dialogue and coexistence between their societies building a vision for the future of the Armenian-Turkish relations.
The initiative consists of two phases. During the first phase, the selected group of students from Armenia will travel to Turkey and will engage in dialogue and learning experiences with their counterparts from Turkey, including site visits and guest lectures. The Imagine Center will use its methodology to lead the Dialogue sessions and Karakutu will organize a Memory Walk for the participants as an alternative method to remember past violence, conflicts and wrongdoings, and to establish a peaceful and equal society. As a method, the Memory Walk provides young people with the opportunity of hearing alternative narratives and improving their critical thinking skills about the hegemonic historical narratives. In the second phase, the group of students from Turkey will travel to Armenia and continue their dialogue and learning activities through city visits and demo implementation of a Memory Walk.
During the Workshop, the participants will have a chance to share, understand, and reflect on the history and the present-day relationship between people from Armenia and Turkey.
The language of the program is English.
The program is open to university students older than 18 that are pursuing a degree in social sciences (from history and psychology to architecture and anthropology), arts, cultural studies, and other related areas. If you are interested in participating in the program, please fill out the online application form and submit by March 24, 2017.
